Artist’s Statement and Bio

Sean Mellor was born in September 69 to a hard-working working-class couple who met at a Methodist youth club. He has lived the vast majority of his life in the North East of England.  His formal art education started and stopped at a normal everyday high school at the age of 16, with thoughts of becoming a computer scientist with the burgeoning brand-new IT industry, an  O-level in art with Photography was all he completed. No art  was pursued until many years later.

Mellor’s current art started as he felt pushed and pulled in all kinds of directions to create ’something’, some form of creative self expression and experimented with  many mediums, processes and techniques with what he now produces reflecting a lot of this history and his rebellious youth.   He’s been surrounded by strong women, gender politics, political discourse and gin throughout his life.  His love of the outdoors, particularly the Cheviot Hills, the Lake District, the North Yorkshire moors, expansive skies, the beautiful empty beaches of Northumberland, its castles and ancient history, all of this informs and shapes his art today.

Mellor, describes himself as a conceptual abstract expressionist, creating work that reacts to emotion, colour, and shape, exploring themes like masculinity, landscape, seascape, the human figure, music, and flora.

His recent work has been focused on finding a male voice that is not part of the male dogma, not part of the male, heterosexual, white, middle class privileged voice. He is trying to reveal his honest and genuine self.

Mellor is trying to find a  voice that not only represents all of the stripped away parts and what is left, but is also restorative, repairing and healing for himself and hopefully others.
